We’ve all likely had a “driveway moment” as NPR puts it.  Mine was the other day as I heard Bill Withers singing “Lean on Me.” As I listened, I wondered what had inspired Mr. Withers to pen these lyrics.  I thought surely, God must have been speaking to his heart. A Google search reveals he was from a coal mining town in West VA, missing the community ethic of his hometown after he had moved to LA.

The song spoke to me, reminding me to be more mindful of the difficulties and struggles of life faced by so many now.  I see it in our clients who come to our Taft and St John’s Red Door Food Pantries.  They are so appreciative of the basic items they receive, often things I take for granted.

I ask that I be humbled to better understand and reach out,   letting those who need someone to “lean on” know that God is there for them and for all of us. Thank you for being with me in whatever I face.  It is through you that we can be lifted up, to trade despair for hope.

Portions of lyrics by William Withers to “Lean on Me”

…….Lean on me when you’re not strong

And I’ll be your friend,  I’ll help you carry on

For it won’t be long till I’m going to need someone to lean on

I just might have a problem that you’ll understand

We all need somebody to lean on………
