Good Friday

We are blessed in the Christian tradition with many resources that help us to walk with Jesus to the cross:  personal devotionals, corporate worship, hymns and spiritual songs…  On Good Friday these may lead us to Gospel readings of the crucifixion, worshiping with our St. John congregation at noon or 7 P.M., or perhaps standing and trembling at the foot of the cross with all who have sung the Afro-American spiritual, “Were You There?” with the haunting refrain that follows each verse:

Oh! sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

             The story unfolds as follows:

Vs. 1     Were you there when they crucified my Lord?  (repeat)

Vs. 2     Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?  (repeat)

Vs. 3     Were you there when they pierced him in the side?  (repeat)

Vs. 4     Were you there when the sun refused to shine?  (repeat)

Vs. 5     Were you there when they crucified my Lord?  (repeat)

How can we not “tremble, tremble, tremble” when we come face to face with Jesus’ self-giving, saving love for you, for me, for all God’s children?
