Today, we are witnesses. Jesus, our best friend, who taught us what love is all about, will now teach us about sacrifice. We will witness him offering himself as a living sacrifice, on a real cross, with real nails driven in his hands and feet. At the service this evening we will venerate the cross as the instrument of our salvation.
What does Jesus ask us in light of his offering? We are to remember. We are to appreciate all that Jesus has done for us. And we are to proclaim the love that flows from this sacrifice.
Because of what we have witnessed, we have the courage to recognize sacrifice in others, and offer it ourselves. Today when you have the chance to see, don’t look away. Look into Jesus’ eyes with the certainty that you will follow him.
